The Highest Quality Requirement: How EB Industries Precision Welding Helped Manufacture a Life-Saving Implantable Medical Device

Advance Turning & Manufacturing performs turnkey manufacturing for its customers, however; the company does not perform precision welding operations. Advance Turning works with EB Industries to obtain that specialized welding expertise.

Jeff Dick, Purchasing Manager, says, “We appreciate EB Industries ability to work with us and their team opening up and saying, OK, what can we do to help?”

The Precision Challenge: A Weld that Allows an Implantable Part to Operate Safely in the Human Body

Advance Turning needed a precision weld for an extremely complex part used in an implantable medical device. The part required extensive CNC machine programming and inspection throughout its manufacturing process, and it had a very challenging finish requirement. Weld splatter had to be eliminated.

EB Industries' Expertise Overcomes the Challenge

EB Industries specialists worked with Advance Turning personnel to refine the design and the testing for the part’s manufacturing process. This resulted in tightened tolerances for the part. The process revisions allowed EB Industries to use its precision laser hermetic sealing welding technology to form a very clean weld line. The laser hermetic sealing technology enabled Advance Machine to meet the critical specifications for the finish requirements on the part.

Advance Turning relied on EB Industries to successfully complete the manufacturing process. Dick indicated that “the feedback from EB Industries was invaluable in helping us with our machining methods. Also, EB personnel worked with us on final inspection procedures. They helped solve many of the issues early on in the project.”

Laser Hermetic Sealing Provides the Best Surface Finish for Welds on Medical Implants

Laser hermetic sealing uses a high-power laser to join metals. The technology allows joining of very small and very thin materials in a controlled environment. Laser hermetic sealing offers:

  • High Reliability – Laser welding provides an exceptionally durable hermetic seal.
  • Undamaged Surrounding Areas – The technology has a narrow heat-affected zone, preventing damage to adjacent materials.
  • Negligible Contamination – The weld contains less than 1 ppm oxygen and moisture, unmatched by any other joining process.
  • Material Flexibility – Laser welding can join dissimilar materials and crack-sensitive materials.

Close Partnership Leads to Success

Dick considers EB Industries a critical component of Advance Turning’s success.

“Our relationship with EBI has been a close, strategic partnership. They have opened up their facility to us, and their personnel will work with us on-site.” He was particularly enthusiastic about EB Industries’ performance on the implantable device project.

“This is the most important part we make,” he said. “It is a life-saving part. Everybody at Advance Turning takes it very seriously. And to know that EBI takes it just as seriously is critical.”

Pam Shepard, Director of Sales and Customer Service, also loves the collaboration and responsiveness of EB Industries personnel. She says, “I know who to contact at EBI, I get a quick response, and that is invaluable.” She agrees with Dick that EB Industries has had a huge impact on Advance Turning’s business.

“When needed, EBI has integrated their experts with our team. The knowledge that EBI brings has more quickly identified solutions to problems as well as made our own customers more confident in our services,” she said.

Dick summarizes his opinion of EB Industries as a valuable resource for precision welding expertise:

“I would describe EB Industries as a down-to-earth company willing to put in the work to make things successful, willing to be collaborative with us on anything, answer any questions. They have an open-door policy that truly makes a difference for our company.”
